Colorado’s Amendment 49- Vote YES!

Do you enjoy having Uncle Sam dip his filthy hand into your pocket every paycheck to extract Federal Income Taxes, State Income Taxes, FICA, and Social Security?? What if instead of the Government dipping in for their pound of flesh it was a union boss? At least the Government has been voted the power to do its dirty deeds. The union bossed figured out that having the government collect the money for them was a great idea. After all, the Government collects its money with the inherent threat of someone with a gun showing up to collect it should you get “uppity”. All Amendment 49 does is remove the Government as a middleman. The union bosses will get to do their own dirty work. Real pity there. NOT!!!!

I am disgusted by the TV ads that I have seen where the union bosses have the unmitigated gall to state that Amendment 49 takes away workers right to choose. It’s more accurate to state that Amendment 49 takes away the union bosses right to do whatever they damned well please with workers money. One thing you really need to remember when you are ready to vote is that the only sector where union membership has increased is with GOVERNMENT workers. The reason is pretty simple. Workers have seen the damage that unions do to businesses. A belligerent union can cripple a company and that company will fail when it attempts to compete in a market while it is handicapped by union action. Instead of getting better working conditions and better pay that the unions promise, workers get laid off. This is happening to Detroit autoworkers as we speak. Many of the companies that have moved overseas have done so to escape aggressive unions that want high school grads to make as much or more than college grads, all in the name of “fairness”. All of that risk goes away when unions talk to government workers. You can’t run the government out of business. Run out of taxpayer money? Just raise taxes!!! Wow, problem solved right? WRONG!! If I am correct almost every major school district in the metro area has a 3A and 3B measure on their ballots. With those spending measure and Amendment 59 the teachers unions are trying to mainline tax dollars to feed their habit. This has to stop!!!

Do not believe the unions. They are not on your side. Take away their last bastion of safety and vote yes for Amendment 49!!

Amendment 54: Clean Government Colorado

Well, well, well. I was wondering what it was about Colorado’s Amendment 54that had the union bosses so worried. Well, I found out this week. My understanding of the Amendment was that it would bar businesses that were awarded no-bid contracts from giving money to the politicians that made the decisions about the no-bid contract. Initially my reaction was to vote against this measure because I feel that we should be punishing politicians for breach of ethics not business for doing business. So why the change of mind? Because Amendment 54 affects ANY organization that receives a no-bid contract. This includes unions that are party to exclusive collective bargaining agreements!!! Now I understand why the unions are so nervous about this measure. Amendment 54 would either ban them from greasing the palms of the politicians that sit in on the collective bargaining agreement negotiations or would require the historically union shops to open up to competition. What a conundrum for the union bosses!! They can’t bribe their way to lucrative contract terms on the backs of the taxpayers or they have to deal with a competitive market which also benefits the taxpayers. Why do I not feel sorry for the union bosses here? Oh right, I’m a TAXPAYER!!! Do yourself a favor and your fellow taxpayers a favor and vote yes for Amendment 54.

I will be chiming in on the Colorado ballot over the next week. Just in time for the mail-in ballots.

I want to thank the People’s Press Collective (PPC) for their 2008 ballot guide.

Today I want to talk about Amendment 48: The Personhood Amendment.

The PPC states in their ballot guide that this Amendment is wrong not becuase of religious reasons but because the vague wording will play havoc with Colorado laws. I would add that it will certainly be shot down by the Supreme Court even if it passes. As a Libertarian I do not oppose this measure on strictly religious grounds. I oppose it on “leave me the hell alone” grounds. The same grounds I will oppose many other amendments in this election. This particular amendment just happens to be of the pesky religious right “we are morally superior and will now beat you over the head with our Bibles” variety, instead of the pesky Socialist “we are here to take your money to give to the needy” variety. My message to the religous right is the same as it has been for years. If you don’t like abortion, line up and adopt these unwanted babies instead of having the government enforce your self-righteous moralism.
